Donna Adja is a multi-talented Afropop singer-songwriter hailing from Delta State in Nigeria, whose work has appeared on radio as well as MTV Base and Africa. Her sensational singles include “Breathe,” “Super Love,” “Wakanda Forever,” “Oghene Do,” “I Like Your Body,” and many more. Top Nigerian newspaper The Sun counted her among the 100 Most Influential African Women in the Music Industry. She’s now based in Los Angeles, California, where she dispenses medicinal hits like “Ganja.”
VMG had a moment to sit with the new wave and discuss the hot new single that has the summer on fire and more.
1) What keeps you motivated when it comes to your music?
I love doing music—music is life to me, so the entire world around me can be motivating. I gather inspiration from everything I see and hear. One time, I woke up to a buzzing alarm clock, and the sound of the alarm sparked something in my sleepy imagination, and the next thing you know, I was making a melody from it.
2) What comes to mind when you think of “Vintage Media Group”?
Vintage Media is an amazing platform that gives artists a chance to showcase their talents to the
world.
3) Being that you are from Los Angeles, what is the state of Afropop there? How would you title your style of music?
Afropop (also called Afrobeat) is now being recognized all over the world, and for that I am grateful. Afropop is a very happy vibe that will make you dance and forget your troubles. More and more people are welcoming it, and that makes me happy. Afropop stars are breaking through in the US and collaborating with top American stars. It’s an exciting time to be making Afrobeat.
4) With your most recent single “Ganja” which sounds fun, can you give us some details on how you came up with that song?
My latest song, “Ganja,” is a love song, and the way I see it, love is intoxicating. When we fall in love, we just want to breathe in everything about our new love, just fill our lungs with that irreplaceable feeling. Ganja seemed like the best word to describe that experience.

6) Who are some of your influences?
Many great artists inspire me—there’s so much talent in the world. But to narrow things down to the top influences, I have to say that I love Beyoncé for her endless drive and energy, Cardi B for her fun personality and lively attitude, Toni Braxton is the first artist I tried to pattern myself after when I was starting out, while Celine Dion’s unique and powerful voice is something I always come back to.

My last remark is don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re not good enough. Keep grinding, and never give up.
