I wrote this article 1 year ago when Good Kid M.A.A.D City certified Gold, on one of my mentor’s ATL based site thatretailchick.com. 1 year later I still stand by every single word that I wrote. Check it out below.
“Kendrick Lamar is this era’s Bob Dylan. Masterful story telling. Listen to it, it will elevate you. And just like that music has changed”. -Pharrell Williams
Kendrick Lamar is the breath of fresh air that hip-hop has been longing for. His album Good Kid Maad city just recently went gold and TRC is so proud! When the album first hit the shelves I skipped around and just listened to tracks that I heard people talk about such as “Poetic Justice”, and “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”. But Ooooh man- it was a whole nother’ thing listening to the album from beginning to end! I don’t even want to refer to this man as a rapper because the term has been so misused, and slapped on just anyone. K-Dot’s artistry, the way he tells his story is authentic and captivating. This album is one that will be replayed over and over because you want to catch anything that you may have missed during your first listen. “Breathe slow and you’ll find gold mines in these lines.” On other posts that I read, I’ve seen people compare him to masterminds like Nas. First album and the kid is already being categorized with the greats in Music. I’ve been saying this for a minute, and hopefully people are starting to see that hip-hop is being resurrected. The culture was killing its-self (literally) and the music was losing substance. We love our club bangers, but our generation is in desperate need of timeless music. I’ll go out on a limb when I say Kendrick Lamar is one of the best artists out of the west-coast since Tupac…YES I SAID.”
Four official singles, 1million+ records sold, and 1 year later Kendrick Lamar has proven me right; challanging the entire Hip-Hop community to come with nothing less than your absolute best. Salute K-Dot.
