How to know you’re becoming a Hipster

The hipster trend has been around for nearly half a decade now and is becoming increasingly common. It’s often a style that the wearer only realises they emulate over time, starting with one or two of the items below and ramping up to more. Here are some additions you need to watch out for.

Messenger Bags

Just like anyone else, a Hipster needs to have something in which they can carry all of their bits and pieces in. The bag of choice is commonly a messenger/satchel/courier style bag – leather and vintage, if possible, but whatever you like works. Even better if it features separate compartments for your iPhone, laptop etc. Just sling it over your shoulder, and you’ll be good to go in no time.

Tech Gadgetry

Hipsters do like to eschew consumerism, but they love their tech, too – they often have the latest laptop and phone technology, even as they bemoan how the typewriter is no longer considered a legitimate instrument for typing.

Man Bun

If you have a trendy hairstyle then you may be a hipster. The man bun hairstyle has risen to prominence in the last 2-3 years and can be seen as a hipster way of fixing ones hair.

Old School Sneakers

Many of us have some Converse, Keds or, better yet, Doc Martins abandoned in the back of our closets, simply collecting dust all day. These are essential hipster accessories, so dust them of and start wearing them again. Here is a cool list.

Old School Accessories

You know those grandma knit scarves, floppy hats, grandma knit scarves and lunchboxes? Those will come in handy as well. It’s important that they are functional, on top of looking cool. Unlike fishnet stocking gloves which goths and punks wear, you should wear them only when it is cold. It’s more about practicality than making a statement, but it is ok if you do so.

For instance, the Edgar Allan Poe-themed Metal Collectible Lunchbox, manufactured by Amethyst & Ivy, can give you a very literary air, and keep your lunch packed away neatly. Do not put it in your bag, though – it has to be seen. If you have a desk job, for instance, place it somewhere prominent, allowing the whole office to see it.

Ironic Clothing

It can be quite hard sometimes to find proper vintage clothes, and since a Hipster loves to mix it up, feel free to wear modern pieces of clothing, too. It’s okay, you’ll still be a hipster. Just remember to wear it in an ironic manner – take this however you like. A classic is a sports jacket over a print t-shirt, or a hoodie over plaid shirts.

Thick-rimmed Glasses

If you need glasses, use it to your advantage – get a new pair with very thick rims. If you don’t need them, buy a sunglass of the sort, of get a pair without glass.

Jewelry

It should be like statement jewelry, but not too ‘in your face’. Long necklaces, perhaps with a stand out pendant and layered chains. Cute earrings which can be dangly, and many be subtle piercings on the face, such as a nose stud or a slim eyebrow ring. This should go for females and males, although most males don’t go for facial piercings.
