Since late 2015, Dave East has been banging out his “East Mixes,” remixes of popular tracks. The well-received series, which has included him going in over Drake’s “Summer Sixteen” and the Desiigner track “Panda”, comes to a close with the Harlem rapper tackling one last instrumental, choosing to flip Erykah Badu’s smash hit “On and On” to pay homage to the singer for her birthday, which was yesterday (Feb. 26).

Over the original production, Dave takes off, first using Badu’s slow tempo, then springing into action with straight bars about his daily dealings and place in the game. As noted, this will be the last of these remixes as East preps his debut on Nas’ Mass Appeal Record label. On the cover art to the song, East sits with a joint in one hand and a note in his lap which reads: “Happy Birthday Ms. Badu. This is my last East Mix. With love, from Japan. See y’all this summer.”

“On and On” was the debut single from Badu which dropped back in 1997 and later appeared on her album Baduzim. It ended up being a hit for the neo soul singer notching her first No. 1 single on Billboard and earning her a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1998. The Color Purple themed video was also nominated at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Female Video and Best R&B Video.
