January 15, 1967 marked the start of America’s most watched athletic televised event, the National Football League’s championship game, or as we refer to as the Superbowl. In Superbowl I the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Besides what we hope to be a great football game, we also expect to see a great halftime show. In the earlier Super Bowl halftime shows, they always featured a college band….we didn’t see a “pop star” until later on in the 70’s. The producer’s of the halftime show in 1967 may not have chosen a big Motown star but they were in search of some good music, and extended the invitation to HBCU Grambling State University, who performed with the University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band, Al Hirt, and Anaheim High School Drill Team and Javier Saenz. The nationally acclaimed Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band appeared multiple times at the super bowl after their 1967 debut.
