We’ve compared Clyde Kelly, 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, CA, to some of our favorite rappers. But on his latest single, you can hear a different influence, something more like The Neighbourhood meets Justin Timberlake. On his debut single “Summer Breeze,” he switches from restrained melodic poetry to faster flows to a big, smooth pop hook. He signed to independent label Halliburton Productions in April, and this is his first release since.

VMG had a moment with the Long Beach, native to see whats’s new and to check out the DOPE new single “Summer Breeze”.

1) What keeps you motivated when it comes to your music?

I’m motivated by how music makes me feel. I love my music, and I love a lot of other artists’ music. The feeling I get from the right lyric at the right time at the right melody or the perfect bass drop is my motivation.

2) When you think of “Vintage Media Group”, what comes to mind?

Appreciation! VMG showed a lot of love to my first loosie Cold Shoulder, and now I have the opportunity to share some more about my music with VMG. It’s awesome how you guys are willing to give some shine to a new artist like myself.

3) Being that you are from Long Beach, what is the state of Hip-Hop there? How would you titled your style of music?

I’m actually from North Carolina. I just live and record in Long Beach now. Obviously you have greats like Snoop Dogg and more recent buzzing artists like Vince Staples coming out of Long Beach. It’s an inspirational place — great people, sunshine all the time. We live good out here and I have a lot of love for this city.

My style of music is just as genre-confused as a lot of other new artists. I’m somewhere in the venn diagram of hip-hop / soul / electronic / dance music. The lines are blurring. But this latest single Summer Breeze is one of the less electronic-influenced songs. Less 808, more of a folk feel.

4) With your most recent music single “Summer Breeze” is Crazy NICE, I Really Like It… can you give us some details on how you came up with this song?

This is a song I wrote at a point where I was getting stressed out by all the difficulties of daily life. Caught up in the minutia. I was sitting on my back porch with my girlfriend one Friday night. It was early summer. We were sharing a joint, and I had a moment of clarity. I took a deep breath and suddenly felt free of all the stress and negativity. I remembered how good life is and how blessed I am. And I decided that I wanted to live in that moment mentally forever. The hook is meant to represent that moment.

7) Any Last Remarks?
